The MA covered the exploration of the human condition through
portraiture. It intended to reflect the world around us. Inspired by artist Simon Birch, (born UK, 1974), who said, "I paint the human body. I paint Life, raw, loved and unloved, thrashing and twisting, falling, arms outstretched trying to protect ourselves from the future".
During the MA practice (initially through a series of self-portraits,) the objective was to promote an authenticity of emotion, by drawing on the extreme negative emotions experienced in a period of depression.
These were followed, by a series of paintings with a physical and metaphorical idea of "getting up". The inspiration was taken from contemporary dance, to represent overcoming emotional and physical difficulties.
